💖 How It All Began
The start of my Tartan Adventure
“I wanted to create more than just tartan. I wanted to create joy — something children could feel proud in, something that celebrates identity, colour, and kindness.”
While working on my other brand, The Highland Dancer, I needed a tartan of my own. That’s where it all started — figuring out how tartans worked, how the lines and patterns came together. It wasn’t easy. But one day, sitting on the beach, it clicked. I rushed home, sketchbook in hand, and stayed up all night until the first design came to life: the Isle of Bute Sky Tartan. It wasn’t a traditional tartan — it was a tartan-inspired design — but I ran with it. From there, the Sky Collection was born, each one named after an island, each one woven with meaning.
I began creating products, including clogs, and tested them in the Highland dance world. To my joy — they worked! People connected with the designs. They felt fresh, fun, and meaningful.
As things grew, I knew this needed a new home — a brand of its own. So Happy Tartan was born. I trademarked the name, designed the logo, started the website, and stepped into a long, colourful journey.
That’s when the idea of telling stories through the tartans began.
Stories full of joy. That’s when the Happy Tartan Girls arrived. I spent hours developing their personalities, look, adventures, and values. Each detail mattered. I reviewed everything over and over again, sometimes working through the night just to get the colours, the energy, and their voices just right.
And somewhere along the way, it became about more than tartan. It became about happiness — creating something that lifts spirits, sparks creativity, and wraps kids in joy. These girls weren’t just characters. They became part of the story themselves — showing me who they were and reminding me what truly matters.
This is still the beginning. I did a soft launch to start shaping the process — publishing, planning, and slowly pulling the pieces together. It’s still small. Still building. Still figuring it out. But me and the girls? We’re doing it with heart.

Threads of Kindness is our way of giving back. Part of every sale helps fund creative projects for kids and communities — especially in places that need more colour and care.
From art workshops to youth events and supporting places like Rothesay Pavilion, we believe creativity is a powerful way to bring people together.

This is deeply important to us. There’s not enough funding for core youth projects. It's often slow, difficult, and full of barriers. We want to change that. The more we raise, the more we can do — quickly and directly — without waiting for permission.
