Happy Tartan® began with a simple idea: to create tartan that makes people smile.

Traditional tartans have long told stories of clans, places and identity. But what if tartan could also tell stories of friendship, creativity and happiness?

Founded on the Isle of Bute by designer and artist Nicola Jones, the brand began with sketchbooks, colour experiments and a deep love of storytelling.

The first design — Bute Sky Tartan® — sparked something more than a pattern.

It opened the door to a new way of thinking.

Each tartan became part of a bigger picture — not just fabric, but a feeling. A place. A personality.

And from that, a world began to form.

Each girl wears her own tartan, has her own personality, and brings a different energy to the brand. Through storybooks, cartoons, clothing and creative content, they invite people into a world that is playful, colourful and full of life.

👩🎨 About the Designer: Nicola Jones

Nicola Jones is a multimedia artist, storyteller and community creator based on the Isle of Bute, Scotland.

With a background in digital design, children’s storytelling and brand development, her work blends creativity with purpose. Across her projects — from fashion to writing to community initiatives — the focus remains the same: to create meaningful, engaging experiences that bring people together.

Nicola is also the founder of Threads of Kindness™, the charitable side of Happy Tartan®, supporting youth arts, creative learning and community-led projects.
