Happy Tartan® began with a simple idea: to create tartan that makes people smile. For years, traditional tartans have told stories of clans, places, and people. But what if tartan could also tell the story of happiness, friendship, and creative colour?

Founded on the Isle of Bute by Scottish designer and artist Nicola Jones, Happy Tartan® brings a fresh twist to a centuries-old tradition. It began with sketchbooks full of colour, digital fabric samples, and a love for storytelling. Nicola envisioned a modern tartan brand that fused Scottish textile heritage with vibrant new design — one that was fun, meaningful, and full of heart.

Each tartan in the collection is carefully designed to reflect a place, a mood, or a moment. Whether it’s the dreamy blues of the Bute Sky Tartan® or the soft pinks of the Islay Sky Tartan®, every pattern is unique — like a wearable piece of art.

👩🎨 About the Designer: Nicola Jones

Nicola Jones is a multimedia artist, storyteller, and community creator based on the Isle of Bute, Scotland. With a background in digital design, children’s writing, and creative brand development, Nicola brings more than two decades of experience to her work.

Driven by a love for Scottish identity and culture, she blends artistic playfulness with meaningful purpose. Nicola’s work spans across clothing, character design, writing, and charitable projects. Her mission is simple: to inspire joy, build connection, and support future creatives through her brands.

Nicola is also the founder of Threads of Kindness™, the charitable strand of Happy Tartan®, which supports youth arts, creative education, and community-led projects throughout Scotland.
